Board of Nursing Washington is a state regulating agency and authorized to regulate nurse practice and nursing programs. The Board is a part of Department of Health, Health Professional Licensing Administration and, consists of 22 board members representing various nursing field and citizens.


The Board includes:

  • Seven Registered Nurses
  • Two Licensed Practical Nurses
  • Eleven DC residents
  • Two consumer members, appointed by the Mayor on the consent and advice of the DC Council

Washington State Board of Nursing was established and authorized to regulate the practice of registered nurses (RN), practical nurses (LPN), and advanced practice registered nurses (APRN)—nurse midwives, nurse anesthetists, clinical nurse specialists and nurse practitioners and trained medication employees (TME).

It is also the responsibility of the Board to accredit DC professional nursing and practical nursing programs offered by various schools and colleges throughout the state. The Board also administers a rehabilitation program, Committee On Impaired Nurses (COIN), which was created for nurses that are found with impaired practice due to substance abuse or mental illness.
