North Carolina State Board of Nursing was established in 1903 and NC State also boasts as the first state in the nation to have a Board of Nursing. Today, the North Carolina Board of Nursing has granted license to more than 127,000 RNs and LPNs statewide.


Board of Nursing North Carolina is the state government nursing regulatory agency established by law to protect, safety and welfare of Public Health by regulating the practice of Nurses in the state of North Carolina. This is also the only state in United States that elects the majority of nurses to its Board. The board constitutes of 14 (fourteen) members and eleven (11) of the fourteen board members are duly elected by nurses holding valid North Carolina state nursing licenses.  Each year the Board conducts an election to fill the vacant seats and from July 1 to August 15th voting takes place.

It is the responsibility of the board to issue, renew and reinstate nursing licenses for Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses. Other duties performed by the board includes, developing, approving and monitoring nursing education programs in the NC State that result into initial licensure; implementing the practice of nursing as per the state’s Nursing Practice Act; hear, review and investigate complaints against licensed nurses. The board also administers the nurse licensure compact; regulate, manage and maintain the Nurse Aide II registry and regulate the practice of Nurse Practitioners and Nurse Midwives.

The board also has strategic yearly plans drawn up that reflect the Board of Nursing’s Mission, Vision and Values. The plans explain about the effective communication, components of quality improvement, effective communication and application of relevant technology. These Mission, Vision and Values are integral to the plan and inherently woven into each strategic initiative.
