The Mission Statement of the Board of Nursing South Dakota is to safeguard the public health, safety and welfare and to protect the SD citizens from the practice of the unauthorized, unqualified or individuals that apply improper application of nursing practice and services, and education programs in accordance with SDCL 36-9and SDCL 36-9A.


Therefore, to safeguard the public health, safety and welfare of the ND public, a state regulatory authority, Board of Nursing South Dakota has been created and entrusted with the responsibility and authorized to regulate these public health safety measures as set forth in SDCL chapter and powered to enforce the stipulations of Nurse Practice Act and law chapters.

Board of Nursing South Dakota comprises of 10 Board members that are appointed by the Governor/Legislatures. The board members represent nursing field and public. Out of 10 board members appointed in the Board,, 6 members are Registered Nurses, 2 Licensed Practical Nurse, and 2 represents public.

In order to safeguard the public health, safety and welfare and to protect the SD citizens from the practice of the unauthorized, unqualified or individuals that apply improper application of nursing practice and services, and education programs, the Board have promulgated rules pursuant to chapter 1-26 pertaining to:

  • Licensing and licenses
  • The nursing practice
  • Setting the scope of nursing practice
  • The allocation of nursing functions to unlicensed assistive personnel under the supervision of a licensed nurse.
  • Developing training and supervisory requirements for unlicensed personnel, who perform these delegated nursing functions under the supervision of a licensed nurse;
  • Disciplinary measures
  • Nurse anesthetists Certification
  • Fees schedules
  • Approval of nursing education and clinical enrichment programs
