What is the importance of nursing school accreditation? What benefits can be accrued from attending Accredited Nursing Schools? There are numerous reasons for any nursing student to attend accredited nursing schools.


The common benefits one can avail by completing their nursing programs from such nursing schools include:

  • Completion of programs from Accredited Nursing Schools allows student to attend in federally funded and state entitlement programs.
  • Qualify to attend other accredited schools to pursue further advanced studies, which also include RN-to-BSN and master’s programs.
  • Graduates from accredited schools finds job easily and are offered better salaries.

Important Nursing School Accreditation Bodies

The National League of Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) and The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) are two national organizations that accredit nursing education programs offered by numerous nursing schools throughout United States. NLNAC accredits masters, baccalaureate, associates and diploma, and other programs, whereas CCNE accredits only masters and baccalaureate level nursing degrees programs.

The accreditation for advanced practice nursing fields, including nurse anesthetist and nurse-midwife programs are accredited by different accrediting bodies, such as The Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA) and The American College of Nurse-Midwives Division of Accreditation (ACNM). COA accredits all nurse anesthesia programs at the certificate, masters and doctoral degree levels and ACNM grants accreditation to midwifery education programs.

The Higher Learning Commission (NCAHLC) based in Chicago is also one of two independent commission members of the NCA (North Central Associate of Colleges and Schools). The HLC is recognized by US Department of Education and the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

At present, accreditation is offered to programs including, nursing doctorate 1, master’s degree 102, baccalaureate 259, associate degree 617, diploma 59 and practical nursing 153.

The basic criteria used by these accrediting bodies to accredit programs are similar and accreditation is offered for specific period of time differently to individual schools and programs. Even Board of Nursing of respective state usually approves schools that are accredited, though it is not necessary that any school approved by Board of nursing has received accreditation by a national nursing accreditation body.


Therefore, it is essential for a nursing student or professional to attend Accredited Nursing Schools to get qualified for the pursuit of additional education, get easy jobs with attractive salary and for further progression in professional nursing career.
